The Human Resource Managers’ Association of Uganda (HRMAU) made history on 19th September 2025, with the inaugural Young HR Professionals Summit at Hotel Africana in Kampala. For the first time, young HR professionals across the country had their own dedicated platform to learn, connect and shape the future of human resources in Uganda. The summit brought together a diverse lineup of speakers representing the full spectrum of HR leadership in Uganda leaders who understood both where HR had been and where it was headed. They were positioned to bridge the gap between established best practices and emerging trends that would define the profession’s future.

The summit was designed specifically for emerging professionals. The content focused on practical, immediately applicable skills rather than high-level strategic theory that might have been more relevant to senior executives. The summit addressed several key focus areas that proved transformative for participants. Digital integration and AI sessions taught attendees how to leverage artificial intelligence for recruitment, performance management and data analysis. This wasn’t about replacing human judgment but augmenting it with powerful tools that could improve accuracy and efficiency. The business development component helped HR professionals think beyond traditional people management. Understanding how HR decisions impacted business outcomes, revenue generation and organizational strategy was no longer optional for career advancement.

One of the summit’s defining moment came from Deborah Komugisha Kakande, Head of HR at ICEA Lion Insurance Uganda, who delivered a powerful challenge to the profession: “Employee experience is the new battleground. And this experience is coming from the empathy we create. We are the champions of empathy. If it doesn’t start with you as the HR expert, I don’t know where it’s going to start.” This statement captured the fundamental shift occurring in HR – from administrative function to culture architect, from policy enforcer to empathy champion. The message resonated across sessions as speakers emphasized that modern HR professionals must blend technical expertise with emotional intelligence, strategic thinking with authentic human connection.

The summit format combined interactive presentations, panel discussions and collaborative working sessions. Every session was designed with immediate workplace application in mind.

Participants left with specific tools and approaches they could implement immediately. This, techniques for data-driven decision making and strategies for building credibility with senior leadership. We understood that young professionals needed actionable insights, not just inspirational talks. The content reflected this priority by focusing on skills development rather than motivational speaking.

The event represented an opportunity for young HR professionals to accelerate their career development through concentrated learning and networking. The setting allowed for more personalized interaction with speakers and more meaningful connections with fellow participants. For those serious about advancing their HR careers, this summit offered a unique combination of practical skills development, industry insights and professional relationship building that would have been difficult to replicate through other means.

The partnership with NBS and Coca-Cola demonstrated private sector recognition of this summit’s importance. These organizations understood that supporting professional development created stronger business environments for everyone. The Young HR Professionals Summit represented participants choosing to lead, and the energy in the room confirmed that Uganda’s HR future was in capable hands.
